GV Movie Club : Life of Pi 3D GVmax® Dolby® Atmos™

Reviews have raved about Life of Pi by academy award winning filmmaker Ang Lee as the next Avatar and so I'm really excited to be able to preview this movie in 3D at GVmax® Dolby® Atmos™, Vivo City. To have the perfect movie experience of both visual and audio, it is a must to watch this movie in stunning 3D with the new Dolby® Atmos™ sound system. This movie happens to be the next movie I wanted to watch too and now I got to watch it for free. Big thanks to GV Movie Club for the pair of tickets.

If you look back at Ang Lee's filmography, the movies he directed were of different genres ranging from Chinese sword-fighting thriller Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000 to Superhero flick Hulk in 2003 and the more recent gay romance Brokeback Mountain in 2005. Now this movie, Life of Pi allows Ang Lee to explore the boundary of technology with the 3D special effect.

Life of Pi is adapted from Yann Martel's fantasy adventure novel of the same title. Read the story in short chapters in this blog here. The movie is a retrospective first person story with the adult Pi as narrator recounting his life story to a writer, Rafe Spall who wanted to find inspiration for writing and also to find back the faith to believe in God.

("What has mamaji already told you? He said you had a story that would make me believe in God.")

In the first part of the movie, we were brought back to the time when Pi was a young Indian boy. His real name was named after a beautiful swimming pool in France called Piscine Molitor Patel but he got teased by his classmate for Piscine sounds like "Pissing" to them. One year, he decided to turn the whole situation in favour of himself and so he shorten his name to Pi as in the mathematical number π (3.142) and in turn changed the views of others on him.

("With one word, my name went from an elegant French swimming pool to a stinking Indian latrine - I was pissing everywhere.")

The second part of the movie recounts back to his teens days as we see how Pi came into contact with different religions. In the end, he puts great faith in Christianity and Islam, on top of his family religion of Hinduism.

("Faith is a house with many rooms. But no room for doubt? Oh plenty, on every floor. Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing. Afterall, you cannot know the strength of your faith until it is tested.")

He also falls in love and got into a sweet relationship that needs to end when his dad decided to start a new life in Canada. The whole family and all the zoo animals which were in the plan to be sold away were onboard a Japanese Cargo Ship. Halfway on the journey, the ship met with a strong storm and sunk.

("We will sail like Columbus. But Columbus is looking for India!")

The next part of the movie is when the real adventure started. Pi was the only one who managed to get into the lifeboat together with an orang utan, a hyena, a wounded zebra and a Bengal tiger (Richard Parker, his name got mixed up during administration with the person who found him). After a few days, the rest of the animal died and Richard Parker became Pi only companionship. They drifted on the lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean for over 200 days and we see Pi's survivor skills and how he tried to trained the tiger so that both can lived together in peace.

("I can eat the biscuits, but God made tigers carnivorous, so I must learn to catch fish. If I don't, I'm afraid his last meal would be a skinny vegetarian boy.")

Richard Parker and Pi sailed on and landed on a Mexican beach. The tiger stood in front of the jungle for a while and without turning its head went into the jungle, leaving Pi on the sandy beach. Pi was later sent to the hospital by the people.

("I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.")

When Pi was in the hospital, the Japanese insurance agents asked him to give a whole account of the shipwreck. They found Pi's story too unbelievable and insisted that he tell them the truth so that he can write the report for submission. Pi with no choice gives another account of four human survivors instead and how it ended with him alone and the agents begins to write down.

("Bananas don't float. You said the Orang Utan floated to you in a bundle of bananas, but bananas don't float.")

How Pi re-enact the story for the Japanese insurance agents make us think that in everyone of us, there's an animal inside it. It's a question of truth and belief and also gives us the space to derive our own interpretations of life's mysterious wonders.

(So which story do you prefer? The one with the tiger. That's the better story. Thank you. And so it goes with God. It's an amazing story.")

So, yes, this is truly an amazing movie.  I would say it's  by far the best movie I've watched in 2012. Enjoyed the great animations effect and also did some reflection on the things that were said. There were many memorable scenes like the one at night time with the glowing jelly fishes lighting up the whole calm sea. The other is the mysterious green island they chanced upon that was filled with meerkat. I rate this movie 5/5!

Premiere of The Darkest Hour in 3D at Suntec City Eng Wah Cinema

Source: http://horrornews.net/45605/film-review-the-darkest-hour-2011/

Rushed down after work to Suntec City for this movie. See previous post on how I got a pair of free tickets. The train today was really slow and stopped twice from Raffles City MRT station to City Hall MRT station! The whole journey from my workplace at Alexandra Road to Suntec City, Eng Wah Cinema took me 45 minutes.

SYNOPSIS:

In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply. (Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1093357/)

TRAILER:

REVIEWS:

First of all, I don't find the 3D effect impressive. It feels like a normal 2D movie except that I have to wear another heavy glasses. The whole movie is quite predictable with a weak storyline. In the beginning it shows how the main characters from different places met at a club in Moscow and get to know one another. Suddenly, the electricity of the club got cut off and they saw strange looking lights drifting down from the sky. Once they touch down on the ground, they turned invisible. Everyone went out to have a look and on further investigation, they realised that anybody who came into contact with the invisible object would get disintegrated. Okay, this part is scary. Imagine if it really happens in real life, I don't think I can survived. They are invisible, they can sense human beings and can easily zapped human beings up into thin air. How to avoid them? But in the movie, the 5 youngsters managed to get away and survived. Of course they have to if not there won't be anymore story to tell. So the genius of the group was convinced that the invisible "aliens" were actually energy waves and had came down to Planet Earth to steal Earth's natural resources and minerals. Since they are energy waves, the way to avoid them is to stay indoor at day and go out at night as the Invisible "aliens" have the power to turn on objects that needs electricity. So if they see that the street lights were lighted up, it means those "aliens" were nearby. Survival tip here, get to know more of the enemies you are dealing with. Observed their traits. Throughout their escaping plan to reach the submarine which is the safe meeting place for all other survivors, the 5 of them met with heroic soldiers who stayed to fight the aliens, a young, brave and resourceful lady and a crazy scientist with homemade equipment that successfully managed to block those aliens but not for long. From there, the whole movie is of them getting zapped away one by one. In the end, only three of them survived. Needless to say, out of the three, emerged a pair of lover. Ya, these movies always have to end with one man and one woman surviving and becoming lovers after managed to escape from a big disasters. So predictable. This movie makes aliens from outer space seems really scary. Can someone make a movie of some nice and friendly aliens like the E.T.? Overall, I would rate this movie 2/5.

Opening of Shaw Theatres Lido + Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Thanks Nuffnang that I got a pair of 3D movie tickets for Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides. I have one confession to made and that is I've never watched the previous series of the pirates of the Caribbean at all! Ah, so knowing that I've gotten the free tickets, I quickly did a read up and watched Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on Channel 5 yesterday night. At least, I know who is who in the movie and won't be so lost.

First visit to Show Theatres Lido after a 7 months renovations. The feeling is all so different now.

The iconic wall mural is replaced by this big screen and black images. The whole place looks so modern now.

Singapore's first and only IMAX's Digital Theatre System! Read their introduction here. I wonder is Shaw's competitors going to come out with the IMAX system soon too?

Congratulations on their opening.

Didn't get to take photos with them in real so this is the best I can get.

Queuing for pop corns .

I would really really rate this movie a 5/5 stars for being such a great movie even without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley from the past three hits. This time round, even the director has taken a change from Gore Verbinski to Rob Marshall. However, the series' ever charismatic Johnny Depp is still acting as Captain Jack Sparrow and nothing else seems to matter much.

Just the scenes on the mermaids at Whitecap Bay is fascinating enough. The movie started in London as we see Capt Jack Sparrow disguise as the judge to save Gibbs from the gallows and try to escape with him and then there's the big carriage chase as he jumps from carriage to carriage.

Next, we were introduced to Blackbeard, the most evil villain in the movie. As Jack was being forced to board his ship - Queen Anne's Revenge by the woman from his past - Angelica who's actually Blackbeard's daughter. Jack find himself getting into the journey to the Fountain of Youth together with them.

Evil man
Queen Anne's Revenge
To get the fountain of Youth to work, there are certain items that is required. One of which is the mermaid tears and the other is a pair of silver chalices.

The mermaids are enchanting and lures men under the water to feed on them. Pretty as they looked but they are actually dangerous creatures.

This young mermaid in the picture was captured and the man in the picture called Philip was the only one in the crew who treated her with dignity and even gave her a name called Syrena. A romance story between them.

All of them eventually did found the fountain of youth and a fierce fight broke out between Blackbeard's crew and Barbossa's crew. The Spanish team also arrived with the aim to destroy this fountain. Jack managed to get the last drop from the fountain and tricked Blackbeard to drink from the wrong chalice. This part reveals yet how evil Blackbeard was, in order to save himself he rather sacrifices his daughter.

Angelica
Cute Jack Sparrow Voodoo Doll!
Anyway, do stay on as there's a post credit scene after the movie has end.

Met another blogger friend, Hui Yan and she helped us to take this photo. Thanks!

AVATAR Special Edition 3D at West Mall

Learnt that Avatar is coming up with a Special Edition version from the Eng Wah's e-mailer and they are also giving out free poster for a minimum of 3 movie tickets purchased. Bf is a big fan of Avatar ever since we last watch it in the cinema 8 months back so it's not surprising that he asked me to watch it with him first thing on a Saturday morning. My indication that he is a big fan is the fact that he has re-watched the movie at least twice at home, he dreamt of living in Pandora, he loves the colour blue, he told me he wanted to go to South Africa for honeymoon! Although I am not as crazy as he is and I am definitely not someone who would watch the same movie twice as I find it a waste of time and money, I made an exception for this movie because I wanted to travel to Pandora again. Since my parents hasn't watched it before, I asked them to come along.

The special edition consist of 9 more minutes of extra footage. Other than that, the storyline is exactly the same.

It's not hard to imagine how I would look like if I have my own Avatar. Just visit the website below and upload your photo and tadah. Haha. I don't think any Na'vi people wear spectacles in Pandora. They don't have computers, no Tvs, no books, nothing to spoil the eyes. All surrounds them are glow in the dark plants, wild animals. All they do is bond with the animals and plants and trees and they can survive.

How to Train Your Dragon - Great 3D movie

Today is a very special day because it's our 3rd year anniversary and his 24th birthday!!! Just like a blink of the eyes, we've been together for 3 years already! Bf took leave to rest on this special day but I still went to work. Regreting about not taking leave cause even though my body is at work, my heart isn't. Hehe. Bf come to pick me up right after work and make me so gan chiong cause he say he had already booked the movie ticket for 6.55pm. When I left the office it was already 6.30pm. Luckily we made it on time!! To add on to this special day, golden village gave us a goodie bag because it's the "All About Men Movie Nights at GV Marina". Woohoo.

What's inside the goodie bag

- August Man Magazine
- Eternity Fragrance Vial
- $10 Fragrance Voucher
- Fitness First 3 Day Pass
- GV $2 Movie Voucher
- L'Oreal Paris Men Expert 3pc Set
- Exclusive World of Sports 15% Coupons

Realised that with this promotions, there is indeed a vast increase of the men patroning the theatre. It's really a great way to beat the competitors.

Okay, talked about the movie. We watched the 3D version as the non-3D one would only be out tomorrow. Got a great seat in the middle. Realised that if watching 3D movie, we shouldn't sit too far back if not the effect is not as drastic. A very light-hearted movie about how Hiccup become friend with the dragons while the whole colony and even his father are vikings who wanted to kill all the dragons. With a compassionate heart, Hiccup set the dragon known as "toothless" he accidentally caught free rather than trying to prove himself to be a worthy viking by killing it. Really enjoyed watching how Toothless and Hiccup relationship develops in the movie. Makes me feel like having a dragon as a pet too! xPp

From Golden Village Website
DRAGON NAME and Desciption

NIGHT FURY The rarest and most intelligent of the dragon species, this dragon is distinguished by its dark color and piercing yellow eyes, as well as its smaller size, heavy chest and short neck. Possessing the largest wing-to-body ratio of all dragons, it can fly higher, faster and longer than any dragon.

DEADLY NADDER Don't be fooled, because the beautifully colored dragon displays tropical palettes as vivid and varied as a parrot is also extremely dangerous. It is flighty, aggressive, and has a quick and explosive temper, which is made all the worse by its preening vanity.

MONSTROUS NIGHTMARE This dragon is the most visually terrifying and iconic of known dragon species. The mostly red and black dragon is violent, stubborn and tenacious, first to arrive and last to leave a battle. It is gifted with exceptionally good vision and extendable wings that make it appear even bigger, intimidating its enemies.

GRONCKLE This dragon is distinguished by its robust body and relatively tiny wings that can flap with tremendous velocity, endowing it with the ability to fly backwards or sideways.

HIDEOUS ZIPPELBACK The most unusual of the dragons is easy to spot and easy to figure out where it got its name. While it's the longest dragon, it also has the smallest wings, along with short, stocky legs so it's neither great in the air nor effective on the ground.

TERRIBLE TERROR Of all known dragons, this is both the smallest in stature and the most numerous in population. Although there are reportedly thousands of them, it is rarely sighted and some Vikings go their entire lives without seeing one.

Monster VS Alien + my fabulous Dinner + Singapore Flyer

Today is a speical day because today is NK's day BC pay~!

WAHAHA. That means all expense incurred today will be paid by BC today, I don't even have to think about bringing my wallet out. Hehe. We had the whole day planned so we went out early. First stop at The Cathay. Had a simple and quick lunch at QuickBite.

After my quick lunch, we went up for our first 3D movie!!! Monsters VS Aliens!!! If you like movies like "Kungfu Panda" or "shrek", this is a movie you wouldn't want to missed. The 3D effect was quite cool. The first scene when the man hits the ping pong ball, it really felt as the ball is bouncing off the screen and almost hit my face.

Ryden said he will give Jas her Fabulous Dinner.

@ Jalapeno's Pepper

1 Blue Wheel
1 Peach Bloom Tea
1 Texas Grilled Chicken
1 Waffle - Around the world
1 Spaghetti Aglio Olio

It's a restaurant below the SIngapore Flyer that's why if you notice, some of the dishes name are quite related to the Flyer. Blue Wheel, around the world, etc. It's amazing!

Our last stop as the day turns into night.

@ Singapore Flyer

My 2nd time up there. It's hard to make a decision whether to be up there when the sky is still bright or when it's dark. The night scene is nicer due to all the streets and buildings light. However, perhaps if we go in the morning, it would be a different feel altogether? I wouldn't know and guess won't be going up there anytime sooner. This is kinda of go one time and that's it kind of trip. I go for the second time since bf hasn't been up there before.
