[Food] Dinner at Sakon Thai @ Tiong Bahru Plaza

Sakon Thai is a halal-certified Thai restaurant serving authentic Thai food. The restaurant offers a wide range of Thai favourites and even some Western delights in a bright and comfortable setting, making it a family friendly place for a meal. My family and I had dinner at the Tiong Bahru Plaza outlet, which is the outlet located nearest to us.

We managed to secure a cozy corner seat, surrounded by vibrant artwork of Thailand adorning the wall behind us, providing a really cool backdrop.

To start, we ordered the Cheesy French Fries ($4.80) as an Appetizer, the fries were crispy and cheesy. Interestingly, the menu dedicates two pages to Western food options, including pasta, meat dishes and grilled items.

My hubby had the Fried Beef Kway Teow ($9.50) with the stir-fried noodles cooked to perfection and tender beef. It was a flavourful and satisfying dish.

I had the Prawn Vermicelli ($13.90), my all time favourite dish. The prawns were big and succulent with mushrooms added. I love it.

My girl had the Thai Style Salted Egg Fried Rice ($9.50) which we specifically requested to be made  non-spicy. It was delicious and the salted egg flavour was not too overpowering.

We also tried the Thai Prawn Omelette ($8.50) which smelled amazing the moment it was served in. The egg was fluffy and savoury.

We end off our meal with a classic Thai dessert, the Mango Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk ($$7.50). The mango was sweet and yummy. Overall, a satisfying meal.

[Food] Dinner at Shakey's Pizza in Asian Food mall of Lucky Plaza

I brought my girl out on a date to Orchard and we went to Shakey's Pizza for dinner. Shakey's Pizza started over 65 years ago in California and just opened its first outlet in Singapore last year. Located inside the Asian Food Mall, B1 of Lucky Plaza, Shakey's Pizza is a great and convenient place for my girl and I to enjoy some pizza and fried chicken.

History of Shakey's, the Brand that Started it all

Many may not know that Shakey's was the first pizza chain in the United States and the brand name can be traced back to its co-founder, Sherwood "Shakey" Johnson, he got this nickname as a result of suffering from nerve damage and malaria during World War II. Back in the days, Shakey personally played Dixieland jazz piano to entertain customers, and his mantra was "You'll have fun at Shakeys". Today, Shakey's stores can be found in the states of California and Washington, as well as in Japan and the Philippines, delighting pizza enthusiasts across different countries with more than 500 stores. The brand is highly popularised in the Philippines and many even have the misconception that Shakey's originated from there.

World Famous Thin Crust, Fresh Pizza Dough

Shakey's Pizza takes immense pride in their signature thin crust pizza with pizza dough that is made from scratch daily using their own recipe to ensure a distinct flavour and to maintain the highest quality and freshness. Diners can find unique pizza flavours featuring Shakey's recipes such as the Manager's choice, Beef Pepperoni Crunnchhh, Spinach and Glazed Turkey Bacon, Shakey's Special and more. The Beef Pepperoni Cunnchhh comes with Beef Pepperoni slices with crunchy cracklin' U.S. potato strings, making it feels like shredded hashbrowns on a pizza for that extra crunch.

I ordered the Shakey's Special that is loaded with Beef, Italian Beef, Beef Pepperoni, Beef Salami, Mushrooms, Green Bell Pepper and Onions. The thin and crispy crust complement with the flavourful toppings perfectly.

Chicken 'N' Mojos

In addition to pizza, Shakey's fried chicken and their trademarked mojos are also some popular items among customers so I also ordered to try. Shakey's fried chicken is crispy, tender and super juicy. Thumbs up to that. It is served with a special brown gravy to enhance the flavour even more. As for Shakey's unique Mojos, trademarked since the 1990s, these are sliced potato coated and fried with their in-house batter. It comes with mayo dipping sauce. Instead of the usual french fries and wedges, mojos are found here and my girl was so curious about them. Good to know, they also have packet chili sauce if you are like me who prefers to dip in chili sauce.

Other items on the Menu, Wholesome Combo and Dessert

For those of you who wants to order and try everything on the menu, you can also get it all at Shakey's under their Wholesome Combo section. There's different variations of their Bunch of Lunch that allow diners to pick 3 items pizza, chicken, pasta, mojos or simply with their garlic bread. When I was ordering my food, I also spotted this Choc'O S'mores under the dessert section. Topped with Nutella Hazelnut spread and marshmallows, I wish they comes in smaller portion, I almost wanted to order it but I guess with just my girl and I, we wouldn't be able to finish it.

Perfect for Every Occassion, Halal-Certified

From the affordable Value Meal for One to the extensive Monster Meal Deal that can feed 10 to 12 people, there's something for everyone at Shakey's Pizza. Embracing diversity and preferences to diners, they are also Halal-certified to ensure all pizza lovers can enjoy their scrumptious offerings. For those who are planning for corporate events or family gatherings at home, an islandwide delivery option is also available.

Overall, we had a delightful dinner before we took our stroll along Orchard Road to soak in the Christmas atmosphere.

[Food Tasting] Timbre Pizza at Timbre+ One North is now Halal-Certified

Best known for great local music and hoisin-sauce roasted duck pizza, Timbre which used to be located at The Substation back then opens the flagship outlet of Timbre Pizza's at Timbre+ One North and another outlet at One Punggol Hawker Centre. Serving a tantalizing range of halal-certified pizzas, pastas and DIY Sausage Rolls, Timbre Pizza is a great venue for family and friends.

Official Photo of the Store Front

Danny Loong, CEO and Founder of Timbre Group, expressed his excitement about Timbre Pizza's expansion and its impact on the F&B scene. "Timbre's pizzas have always been a beloved part of our menus, and their ok popularity has contributed to our strong presence in the delicious pizzas to an even wider audience across diverse communities in Singapore."

Here's what we had for the night accompanied with live band playing in the background at the Timbre+ outlet. The pizza here are served thin-crusted.

The Half & Half (choice of any two pizza flavours). For us, we had the combination of Nasi Lemak and Roasted Duck. Inspired by Singapore's diversity of races and cultures, beside these two flavours we tried, there are also Tom Yum Seafood, Chili Crab and Beef Rendang that are part of our local favorites' cuisines. The Nasi Lemak Pizza comes with homemade sambal sauce with onions topped with fried anchovies and papadum. I find it a bit too saltish instead of spicy, would prefer if there's more onions. The Roasted Duck Pizza on the other hand is a sweeter version with the hoisin sauce. The main ingredients are roasted duck breast meat, sauteed shiitake mushroom, topped with mozzarella and crispy popiah skins. The crispy popiah skins really provides a good crunch while the roasted duck can be a little dry.

From Left to Right: Awi Rafael, SuperSonic and 53A

Timbre Pizza also partnered with leading local bands such as Awi Rafael, SuperSonic and 53A to introduce a new range of signature band pizzas. These three exclusive pizza were inspired and co-crafted by the band/artist according to their unique personalities. Timbre Pizza also came up with a great initiative in which a percentage of the sales of these signature band pizzas will goes into a dedicated fund for each band/artist to provide support in their musical endeavours such as recording, touring and promoting their music. By enjoying these pizzas, diners can now plays a part in helping to keep music alive and nurturing the growth of local music talents.

Runaway by Awi Rafael is perfect for meat lover as it features beef con carne, chicken cheese sausage and pepperoni with jalapenos for that spicy kick. Of all the pizza, I felt this is the most spicy one.

Sonic Boom by SuperSonic is my favourite which features succulent diced chicken coated in homemade spiced butter sauce and topped with onion, pepper and green chilli.

Spicy Philly Cheesesteak by 53A has tender beef steak smothered in melted cheese and an egg in the middle. My friend's favourite and it kind of feels like eating murtabak.

We also tried the Beef Rillette Rendang which is Fettuccine tossed in traditional rendang sauce and topped with slow cooked beef rillette. This is quite tasty and I like it.

Finally, for sides, we tried the highlight addictive White Baits.

Prices for Pizzas start from S$10.80 for a 7" pizza and $18.80 onwards for a 12" pizza. From 5 June to 30 June 2023, Timbre Pizza is having a launch promotion where diners can purchase a 12" pizza at a special promotional price of just S$18!

Thanks Kenny for jio-ing to this tasting event. Got to try so many yummy pizza accompanied by great live band performance on a Monday evening.

[STAY HOME] OurPasar Essentials - Online Halal Grocer

Cheers and Happy New Year my readers!

Although Singapore had transited to Phase 3 not long ago, a lot of us are still spending more time at home to avoid the crowds. Due to the pandemic, a lot of the business owners had adopted online services to cater for consumer like myself. Online shopping had been super convenient as it saved me the hassle of leaving the house, waiting in the queue and carrying back the heavy groceries from the supermarket or the wet market.

I was recently introduced to OurPasar, an online halal grocer that believes in providing fresh and quality products coupled with great service and price. A visit to their website and one will be able to find the following items available for purchase.

- Meat & Poultry: Premium/Fresh/Frozen Meat
- Seafood: Live/Fresh/Frozen Seafood
- Vegetable: Fresh/Frozen Vegetables and Fresh Fruit
- Pantry: Condiments, Sauces, Paste, Dried Goods, Canned Food, Drinks
- Ready To Cook
- Dairy & Eggs

A 1 kg worth of Sirloin Steak was arranged for me on a Sunday. Unfortunately, my girl had her art class so nobody was at home to receive it. However, I was assured when the driver had informed me that he would leave the Sirloin Steak at the doorstep which was well packed and could last at least for about 6 hours so I was able to carry on my activity outside without worry.

True enough, when we were back, we found a big styrofoam box containing the frozen steak packed in a clear bag, well submerged in ice. The steak was still kept frozen even after a few hours has passed. The 1 kg sirloin steak was already pre-cut to 5 pieces which makes it so much easier for cooking later on. Great job for the well packaging and smooth delivery!

The packaging had a clear label on the production and expiry date. Our steak was packed one day before delivery and can be kept frozen for one year. OurPasar's aim to ensure sustained quality and freshness of the produce from farm to table was well met with satisfactory results.

Now, it's time for Chef Ryden to show off his cooking skill. After thawing, he marinated the meat with Black Pepper and Garlic Salt.

While waiting for the seasoning to set, he prepared the rest of the ingredients to go with the first slice of beef such as broccoli, mushroom with cheese and corn. Once the oven was preheated and the ingredients were all prepared, he put everything on a single tray and baked them together.

For the second slice of beef, he decided to pan fry it with the "leftover" mushrooms, garlic and butter.

These were the final results! Looks fantastic and taste great too just that the cooking time could be shorter as he wanted it to get medium but got well done instead.

As part of their #mysirloinisbetterthanyours campaign, OurPasar is running a promotion for their sirloin meat whereby 1 kg of sirloin cost only $15/kg! When I told hubby the price he was just as surprised to find out.

Beside that, they also have other promotions:

FREECHIX - free whole chicken with minimum spend of $65
FREEBSTEAK - free batang steak with minimum spend of $95
FREESALMON - free salmon with minimum spend of $180

Do note there is no minimum order but there will be a $10 islandwide delivery charge for orders below $60. Orders above $60 will get to enjoy free delivery!

Simply create an account using my referral link https://www.ourpasar.com/?s=01534001 or key in 01534001 under sponsor code during registration to get a $2 cash voucher upon registration that you can use it immediately. So go ahead, create your online account with OurPasar and cart out now!

P.S. Thanks OurPasar for the collaboration and thankful to hubby who did all the hard work by himself from preparation to cooking to plating and washing! He cook, I eat. Hehe.

[Food] Copper Chimney Serves North Indian & Indian Chinese Halal Cuisines in Syed Alwi Road, Little India

I love to eat Indian food but North Indian cuisines isn't usually the first things that comes to my mind because I have limited knowledge on what to order. The most common dish would be the usual roti prata, roti john and my recent favourite butter chicken masala. Also, it's not as easy to find authentic Northern Indian cuisines compared to basic Chinese food.

To my very pleasant surprise, I received an invitation to Copper Chimney for a food tasting session as they recently just got a revamped look with a new menu to boost. This is definitely a chance for me to get to know more about North Indian and Indian Chinese cuisines so that I know what to order next time.

Located at 100 Syed Alwi Road, which is just right opposite the 24 hours Mustafa Centre, Copper Chimney offers authentic North Indian as well as fusion Indian Chinese dishes. The restaurant was also recently awarded with the halal certification to cater to the growing halal market.

Walked through the doorway and saw two rows of dining area that stretched all the way to the back. With such big and long dining tables, the restaurant was big enough to accommodate big groups of family and friends. Warm lights filled the space which emits a sense of coziness. We got the table with white light and it made photo taking easier.

At the end of the restaurant, patrons can view the kitchen to see the chefs at work through the transparent glass panel.

True to its name, the furnishings like the tiles, lamps and cups were all made of copper. This is a two-storey shophouse and the private second floor dining area is reserved for those who wish to hold meetings, corporate events or parties there.

The Menu is carefully curated and featured a variety of Halal North Indian and Chinese Indian cuisine to satisfy the locals as well as international patrons. If I were to choose the dish on my own, I would choose those with photos as it was made more appealing with the 3D effect. Now I will share the dishes that were selected for us during the food tasting session.

We were first served with the Mango Lassi (S$7.00) and Mint Calamansi (S$6.00) in tasting cups to try out the flavours. The Mango Lassi was somewhat like a yoghurt drink and was thick and creamy while the Mint Calamansi was really refreshing.

We started off with the Masala Roomali (S$8.00) which was a great communal sharing dish to start off the actual meal. It was made with a thin and crispy bread filled with onions and tomato topped with a Masala seasoning, The  unique point of the dish was that it was baked over an inverted oven to get this shape and the way to eat it was to break it to smaller pieces.

It was love at first bite for me and I wouldn't have ordered this on my own. The different flavours simply exploded in my mouth and it was very good to bite.

Next up, we were served with the Salmon Fish Tikka (S$18.00) consisting of bite size Salmon meat cooked using a searing Tandoor oven of over 400 degrees. It's amazing that even though some part of the skin was burnt, the flesh inside is still pretty tender. Dipped into the mint and yogurt sauce to get a further enhanced flavour.

The Kurkuri Bhindi (S$5.00) was another perfect snacks for diners. It was deep fried lady fingers and could be enjoyed on its own or paired with rice and dhal. Some people hates to eat lady fingers due to the stickiness but this crispy snack would make you fall in love with this vegetable!

The first main we tried was a rice dish called the Sultani Seekh Rice Platter (S$29.00). Made with premium basmati rice cooked to perfection, the briyani rice was mixed with raisins and accompanied by long sausage like chicken and lamb kebabs. I really loved the briyani rice as it was not sticky however, the kebabs meat was a bit tough. We also felt that it would be better if this was served in a round plate instead of the rectangular plate as it's a bit difficult to scoop and would spill out from the sides.

The next main was a rice and noodle dish known as the Triple Szechuan Rice (S$15.00). This was also an iconic food that could be commonly found in the street of Mumbai where fried rice, hakka noodles and spicy gravy come together. This was one of their Chinese Indian cuisine with a fusion of Chinese and Indian ingredients. This dish was spicy and diners could choose from the vegetarian, chicken or prawn option for this fusion delicacy.

It was time to clear our palate with the Masala tea (S$4.20). One of the typical Indian beverage, it helps in digestion and relieves bloating which was just in time after a heavy meal. I personally didn't quite like the taste of the spices and herbs in my drinks. I still preferred the Mango Lassi which was served earlier on.

What came next was the Naans, Curries and White Rice. We were served with three different type of curries namely the Lucknow Murg Korma (S$16.00), Chicken Lababdar (S$15.00) and Madras Prawn Curry (S$17.00). Every one of us at the table each had a different favourite and mine had got to be the Madras Prawn Curry which was light and fragrant with a hint of sweetness from the prawns. It went super well with the basmati rice too. If you preferred something less spicy, you would love the Lucknow Murg Korma which was more savoury with the butter chicken fused with spices and topped with a touch of saffron. The Chicken Lababdar was a spicier alternative.

For naan, we tried the Plain Naan (S$4.50), Chilli Cheese Naan (S$6.50) and the Garlic Naan (S$5.00). They all tasted well and even better after dipping into the curries. For the Chilli Cheese Naan, green chilli were used.

We ended our hearty meal on a sweet note with two traditional Indian desserts being served in at the same time. The Jalebi with Rabdi (S$8.00) was a freshly made, deep-fried crunchy snack shaped like a pretzel. Coated with a layer of sugar syrup. You could dip it into the condensed milk called Rabdi to balance out the flavour. The Pista Rasmalai (S$7.50) was made of Paneer (Indian cottage cheese) soaked in sweetened milk with lots of crushed pistachios. This dessert was both creamy and sweet. Being a sweet tooth, this two dessert really complete my meal and even though I'm already full, I could still finished up the dessert.

It was really an enjoyable dinner together with friends. Thanks Ck for sending me this group photo. After this tasting session, I found myself more confident to try out Indian food next time. Shall treat this as a guide on the name of the different dishes.

I'm glad to know that Copper Chimney Express outlets are also available in Asia Square and Marina Bay Financial Centre which is so near to my workplace. I can definitely go there during my lunch time the next time I'm craving for some authentic Indian food. Thank you so much for the invitation and arrangement.

A small little fact to know, Copper Chimney was also the only North Indian cuisine operator in the Formula One (F1) Race in Singapore from 2013 to 2016.
