[Event] P&G ‘Thank You, Mom’ Carnival with Special Olympics Athletes and their Super Moms

Procter & Gamble (P&G)'s global Thank You, Mom campaign is back to Singapore for the 6th consecutive year and in partnership with NTUC FairPrice, a carnival was jointly organized and held at the Rainbow Centre for the Special Olympics athletes and their mothers to celebrate the upcoming Mother's Day.

Under the theme "Because of You, I can", the carnival celebrates a mother's role as her child's first and greatest enabler - the one who sees her child's true potential and helps them become who they are. This event puts the spotlight on mothers of the Special Olympics athletes, who give their all in overcoming challenges and struggles so that their children can excel in the sports they've chosen. These stories, in turn became a true inspiration for others.

There was a brief touching moment during the carnival when an exclusive short film produced with the Special Olympics athletes was screened. In the video, we see the Special Olympics athletes Shaman Pandian S/O Jeyabalan (400m athletics, silver), Siti Nurhamizah Binte Hamzah (singles bowling, silver), Priyadarshani D/O Jeyabalan (400m athletics, bronze), Siti Nurhamizah Binte Hamzah (double bowling, bronze), and Siau Ek Jin (50m breaststroke, bronze) paying tribute to their mothers who have defied the odds to enable them to excel in their respective sports.

"You wake up earlier than the sun, I wonder if you sleep at all?" This is one line in the video which really resonate with me, as my Mom has always and still is the one who wakes up the earliest in the whole family just to prepare breakfast and wakes us up.

Guest of Honor Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore District and a disability rights activist giving a speech. The one big takeaway from her speech that I've got was when she mentioned the three different stages in living life.

At the Survival Stage, one has accepted their fate and lives and are not leading their lives, they are merely surviving. At the Successful Stage, one has achieved their dreams. At the Significance Stage, one will poured their own lives out in order to bless others as well and that impacted people's lives at a deeper level.

Not many of us can reached the stage of being significant to others. We usually just tend to aim to be successful or to have a stable life for ourselves.

At the end of the presentation, a cheque of $20,000 was presented to the Special Olympics Singapore from P&G and NTUC FairPrice to showcase the strong commitment to the Special Olympics community that lead the way in being a force for good.

It was a fun-filled afternoon for the Special Olympics athletes, their mothers and the distinguished guests and the media. We were given a booklet of carnival tickets which can be used to exchange for snacks, drinks and the carnival games. Rena and I had lots of fun playing and snacking. We even made some new friend there and this brother is so kind to help Rena played the basketball.

When Rena became a little helper to pick up the rings that were dropped on the floor at one of the games stall. So, she was carried up to had a go for herself. I'm quite surprised that she allowed this big sister to carry her.

We also get to design our own tote bag so that everyone has their own unique tote bag to bring home. It was really a great idea to provide us with the stencils if not I would not have know what to draw on my bag.

Now that I am a mother myself, I can truly understand how our child sees us to be a good role model for them to follow and how much time and energy we had to put in. Thus, I really salute and admire those mothers of the special olympics athletes. Thank you for the invitation to allow me to join in this fun carnival and be part of this special campaign.

Some post-event photos where Rena was having so much fun running and playing with the other kids. Before we left, she even posed for me to take photos.
