It is interesting to know that in a metropolitan city like Singapore, we can actually find farms in a few saturated areas. One of them is in the cluster of Lim Chu Kang.
I received the invitation for a farm tour to visit Quan Fa Organic Farm on a Saturday evening. What is so amazing about them is that they are specialized in organic farming that enables sustainability.
Quan Fa Organic Farm is a home-grown, family-owned business and has been around since the 90s. Crops are organically grown without the use of pesticide nor chemical fertilizer. Over the years, Quan Fa have grown to be one of Singapore's leading distributors for organic fruits and vegetables.
Our farm tour was guided by Mr JJ Liao, the 2nd generation farmer who shared with us so much on the tips and technique of growing the different crops. The farm is divided into different areas, sprouting area, open area and the compost area.
We were introduced to sunflower and wasabi sprouts. Sunflower sprouts are edible after 7 days of growing and can be eaten raw. I didn't try the wasabi sprout though.
Throughout the farm tour, we see many of these yellow and blue colour patch sticking around. According to JJ, these are sticky patch to trap the insects.
Radish.

Favorite garnish.
Spring onion.
Chili pointed upwards are more spicy and ghost pepper is the most spicy.
Here's a papaya tree. Learnt that the whole papaya tree has different uses. The papaya leaves are good cure for dengue fever although they taste very bitter. Just have to juice them.
In terms of organic farming, compost is a main component that allows the elimination of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Quan Fa Compost System uses a unique culturing medium that can helps to eliminate odors of the raw materials consisting of a mixture of decayed vegetations. This compost is used throughout the farm.
Brinjal is a hard to grow plant as the plant falls sick easily. There is also no need for sticky patch as it does not attract too much pests.
After the farm tour, we were treated to a cold and refreshing cup of Lemongrass drink with brown sugar and pandan leaves and organic noodles.
There is also a marketplace within the farm that sells those organically grown vegetables.
Everybody left the place with a big bag of organic vegetables.
Turning those vegetables into a wonderful meal.
