Singapore Biennale 2011 Open House - Old Kallang Airport

The Singapore Biennale Open house offers a rare opportunity for us to enter the Old Kallang Airport which was a place of significance in Singapore's history. The old Kallang airport was opened in 1937 (many years before I was born) as Singapore's first civil airport and was closed in 1955 when a new airport Singapore International Airport was built in Paya Lebar. The main terminal building was later converted and used as the headquarters of the People's Association until 2009.

This event is ongoing until the 15 of May, so packed your camera and go there with a free mind to explore the building and at the same time the art pieces.

Terminal Building

In my opinion, anyone can learn to appreciate art pieces. Art itself when presented can brings about different views and perspective on it. There is no right or wrong answer to how you judge a piece of artwork.

Pipeline Field by Michael Beutler
We see giant rolls and rolls of paper

And on my hand is a piece of art hunt quiz that we are supposed to complete and exchange for a free entry to the Art Museum. The questions are kinda tricky. Didn't complete them though.

Random Intersections by Leonor Antunes
Material used includes leather, rubber, steel and bronze.

Within by Gosia Wlodarczak
Bf just walked pass this gallery whereby the glass walls are covered with drawings. It took her 7 days to finish drawing this in public.

Le Cannibale by Mike Nelson
We see white blocks that are broken and hacked. It probably display a form of anger.

Taken at the spiral staircase. One look at the thick coat of dust and we can guess how long this building has not been maintained.

We have breakfast at Toast Box. The songs they played suits the environment. Retro.

Elmgreen and Dragset - A German Barn

A building within a building. The barn represents a rural lifestyle and form of labour that is fast disappearing especially in an urbanised country like Singapore.

Look at this small little plant here growing through the cracks on the floor, it's also a piece of fantastic artwork.

Self-Portrait, Our Landscape by over 3,000 students
This special project was developed by the Artistic Director of Singapore Biennale 2011, Matthew Ngui. Ranging from 8 to 15 years old, the students were encouraged to draw their self-portrait but without depicting what they look like. So, the drawings became what shaped them to be themselves, like their environment or simply the things they like to do.

Columbarium Eye from Miharu
This structure contains models of over 200 lost buildings from all over the world. This piece of work combines the artist's fascinations with Ferris wheels (looks like the wheel of a car too) and also the vanished architectures.

Slug Towers from Malacca
One of a nature-themed structure. There are many little rooms along the structure.

Behold by Sheela Gowda
Interventions and windings of black ropes together just like in the everyday life in South India, it is a common sight to see ropes of human hair tied around the bumpers of vehicles to ward off evil spirits.

Through a Glass Darkly by Charles Sandison
We entered this totally dark room which was surrounded by digital projection of texts. We immersed ourselves in this ever changing sea of words whereby the movement is inspired by the natural. Like the movements of ants on a forest floor, bodies swimming through the water or the flight of birds. We spotted words like "Love" and "Hope" that we like.

Orange is the colour for this event!

At the exit, we were asked if we wanted to take an instant photo for memory. Of course we agreed and this marks the end of the trip to Old Kallang Airport. When this event ends, we also wouldn't know what will be the fate of this place.

We have carrot cake and wantan mee for lunch at Lavender Food Square.
