[Event] Taking Steps to Recycle More, Waste Less with Employees and Public through initiatives by DBS

Last year, DBS introduces the "Live More, Bank Less" ethos and was a widely shared campaign that the bank wants us to put our focus more on living. This year, DBS has reinforce their commitment to become more socially conscious to the environment by launching the "Recycle More, Waste Less" eco-movement.

The focus of this movement is to encourage Singaporeans to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics which is a particularly pressing issue right now. It's alarming to know that according to the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), Singaporeans use at least 1.76 billion of plastic items a year, of which only less than 20% is being recycled. A total of 820 million of plastic bags were also being taken from the supermarkets every year!

Since the launch last year, DBS' call to "Recycle More, Waste Less" had received more than 50,000 pledges from employees and members of the public who pledged to reduce the use of single plastic in their daily lives by saying no to straws or ditching plastic bags for reusable ones.

I attended a sharing session which was held at their newly opened DBS Sparks Studio, located at the bank's headquarters in the Marina Bay Financial Centre district to get more insights. This new in-house content studio will serve as an interactive space for communities including social enterprises supported by DBS Foundation, interest groups within the bank and also public interest groups to gather, network, organise or attend events. With a flexible design, the studio can be transformed into a communal hub at night.

Shee Tse Koon, Country Head, DBS Singapore sharing more on DBS' role in supporting Singapore's vision for a more sustainable society.

Karen Ngui, Head of DBS' Group Strategic Marketing & Communications sharing more on how business of the future can contribute towards sustainable development.

Some of the eco-friendly practices DBS has adopted:

1. Changing procurement practices

DBS has drastically reduced its use and purchase of disposable plastic water bottles, resulting in some 7.3 tons of plastic waste being saved every year. The bank also works with its tech vendor to reuse and reduce packaging for its electronic items. For Chinese New Year this year, the bank handed our red packets as usual but is wrapped in paper instead of plastic wraps, avoiding 220 kg in plastic wastage.

2. Making it easier for employees to adopt sustainable practices

DBS bank has distributed 4,000 reusable bags (which fold easily to become tiny, zipped pouches), 2,000 Sporks (a hybrid metal cutlery tool shaped like a spoon and a fork at either end) and 2,500 sets of metal straws to help employees lead more eco-friendly lives. More than 1,300 employees have also pledged to an ongoing campaign to reduce their carbon footprint in 2019. DBS also recently carried out a six-week campaign that saw some 200 staff volunteers driving greater awareness on recycling among employees. The campaign has resulted in nearly 70% more trash being sorted out for recycling.

3. Helping Singaporeans to become more environmentally-conscious

The bank gave away 20,000 reusable water bottles last year to attendees of the DBS Marina Regatta and Social Enterprise Summit. 8,000 Sporks were also given out as part of a "pledge-for-Sporks" campaign across universities, food outlets and hawker centres in Singapore.

4. Working together with like-minded partners

In December 2018, DBS partnered the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) to jointly launch the 'One Less Plastic' national campaign with four leading supermarket chains - Dairy Farm Singapore Group, NTUC FairPrice, Prime Group and Sheng Siong to encounter the use of reusable bags among supermarket shoppers. To date, some 30,000 reusable bags have been distributed through the partnership.

With all these green initiatives to show DBS's commitment to sustainable development, DBS bank has become the first Singapore bank to be included as an index constituent of the FTSE4Good Global Index, a global sustainability index. The bank is also the first Asian bank and first Singapore company to join global renewable energy initiative RE100.

DBS had stepped even further by pledging to use only renewable energy to power 100% of its Singapore operations by 2030. As part of this commitment, the bank had i
nstalled 1,200 solar panels at its office buildings in Changi Business Park. Today, 40% of DBS' total energy consumption in Singapore comes from renewable sources. In 2017, DBS launched Singapore's first green bond by a financial institution and helped to promote green finance through the issuance of a USD 500 million green bond. In the same year, DBS was also the sole bookrunner for the first green bond by a Singapore Company - City Developments' SGD 100 million green bond.

So, let's all 'spark' this movement and do our small part to bring a big impact to the environment we live in. Don't forget, we've only got one Earth. I'm definitely joining in this movement with just a little bit of inconvenience by bringing my own metal straw and utensils.

Guided by values he holds close to his heart, he stands with the family through their successes and setbacks. It is a story of the triumph of the human spirit, a relationship forged over time, through each loss and every kindness.

Watch Sparks at www.dbs.com/sparks

I'm glad to receive the invitation to the exclusive premiere of this 7th episode held at the DBS Auditorium, Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 3. However, I was late for the show and only managed to catch the last part. Thus, like all of you, I would have to wait till 16 June 2017 to watch it online. I only know this would be a sad episode as Jamie Teo was saying she was crying the whole time during filming.

After the show, there was a 'Behind-The-Sparks Chat' by Karen Ngui, Managing Director and Head of Group Strategic Marketing and Communications, DBS Bank, with two of the new additions to the cast - Singapore artistes Nathan Hartono and Jamie Teo.

Nathan shared on how everything is about instant gratification and it's so easy to get the things you want. Thus, an advice to the young is to have perseverance. Work for the things you want, stick with it and be patience. Jamie advice to the young is to continue learning and be adaptable to different situation. Even a sales person got to learn to do paperwork.

A fun and candid group photo!

Star Struck moments!!

Refreshments served after the screening and chat session.

Beautiful quote, "Let no thing dim the spark within" in this personalized calligraphy memento for us to bring home.

From the DBS Auditorium, we proceed on to the DBS Marina Regatta at The Promontory at Marina Bay.

I recycled my empty plastic bottle and get a 4 digit number to exchange for a packet of tidbits.

During the preview, the Bay Dome is not ready yet so this time round, we went in to take a look. It was an amazing sight and super cooling in there.

We were just in time to catch Nathan Hartono singing live inside the Play Dome. He sang a total of 4 songs before he had to head to the Battle Bay with Jamie Teo for the showdown time as they compete in the 9-challenge inflatable water obstacle course. Didn't stay on to watch as I have to rush back for dinner but I managed to take some videos of Nathan Hartono singing. His singing and beat-boxing skill is too good! There's a part where he was just using his mouth to create the sound that of a saxophone. Check out the two videos I took below!

[DBS] Binge-watch DBS Sparks mini-series with Deliveroo Vouchers Giveaway

Last month, I blogged about catching the premiere of episode 6 of SPARKS, a Mini-Series by DBS. I've finished watching all the 6 episode of DBS SPARKS previously which is about a group of young, high flyers bankers and how they deal with work challenges and personal lives.

All the stories in SPARKS are inspired by true stories that happened and it's really interesting to know that beside just banking transactions and paperwork, the bankers actually go the extra mile for their customers so that their dreams can be achieved.

Being stuck on confinement, I decided to binge-watch all the 6 episodes of Sparks again, in the comfort of my home with my husband and Stefanie who pop by to visit. The whole 6 episodes is about 48 minutes.

This is how we enjoy our lunch while watching the 6 episode series. The motto 'Live More, Bank Less' emphasizes that people bank to live and not live to bank and DBS is inspired to make banking simple to clients so that they have more time and energy to do what truly matters to them. The series touches on different aspect like friendship, relationship, ponzi scheme, social enterprise, technology and more.

My favourite episode is none other than episode 6 which features the bankers travelling overseas to help change the education system of a village by implementing Zaya, social enterprise.

[EVENT] Premiere of DBS SPARKS Episode 6: New Beginnings

SPARKS, by DBS is the first in the banking industry to turn true stories revolving around a group of young bankers and how they go beyond the extra miles to solve unusual challenges by client into a mini-series. Through this mini-series, DBS hopes to redefine the meaning of banking to the public and to change the traditional perception that banking is just about transactions, but is also able to spark new ideas and possibilities.

not live to bank."

Was invited to DBS Asia X for the preview screening of Episode 6 which will be launched on 17th March 2017. In this all-new episode, the bankers went on an incredible journey and was given a challenge that could change the future of an entire village.

EPISODE 6: NEW BEGINNING

Episode 6 is a true story inspired by social enterprise Zaya Learning Labs, the grand prize winner in the inaugural DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge Asia. They are the ones who developed a tech-based learning platform for schools in low income areas and they are on a mission to reach out to 10 million underserved students by 2020. It's hard to develop social impact and be profitable at the same time, and the challenges they faced is not an easy task this time round. How will the bankers succeed in getting the stubborn village chief to adopt this system that would greatly be beneficial and close up the educational gap to the community?

Watch the Sparks Mini-Series at www.dbs.com/sparks to find out more.

Love how this video has convey the message that both girls and boys, no matter where they are should have the equal opportunities for school and to study. In that small community, girls were initially not allowed to attend school. This is really a very traditional mindset. Zaya Learning Labs bring about personalized learning in school and the bankers think out of the box to assist them to fulfil this mission in this village by assisting the village chief in his weaving business first by bringing it online.

DIGITAL DISRUPTION FOR IMPACT

A panel discussion was held right after the preview screening and the topic was about the digital SMEs of the future. In Budget 2017, there is a strong emphasis for business of the future to be sustainable, inclusive and to create social impact.

DBS has been an advocate for businesses that have a social mission and in 2014, they even launched a $50 million foundation (the DBS Foundation) in conjunction with SG50. Social enterprises like Zaya Learning Labs, Homage, WateRoam and some other winners are being awarded the grants, to provide support at every stage of their journey so that they can be sustainable, generate some income and continue in doing good to the community.

Digitalization of business is also crucial for the business growth as that would be how most businesses operate in future, by going digital. At DBS, digital innovation has always been the driving force and they are constantly striving to make banking simpler, quicker and more effortless to customers like us.

From left to right: Host and the panalists - Neil D'Souza, Dr. Alex Lin, Gillian Tee and David Pong
Neil D'Souza, the founder of Zaya Learning Labs was one of the panelists that night. How the name of Zaya came about was that Zaya is the name of his first student in Mongolia, and it means destiny. So he named it after her. A strong message that was brought across is to believe in yourself. Only when you believe in yourself, would investors also believe in you. Also, we have to surround ourselves with people who also believe in our cause.

Social enterprises that have a social mission at the core of what they do. They make a difference to the communities which is relevant to DBS vision is to create a positive impact beyond banking that transforms lives and livelihoods for the better.

SPARK SOME GOOD

This whole event inspired me to do something great with a social impact to benefit the society. I must agree that it would definitely be a lot more fulfilling when your business has created a positive impact to others, rather than working just for the sake of working. I thought of what is lacking in Singapore, and I felt that it would be great if we have a confinement centre to provide that one month care to mummies after giving birth. That is the period when mummies need the most help and support, from taking care of babies and nurturing our body back to health.

Big thanks to the invitation, the wonderful bring home messages and the goodies.

HAVE YOU INIGITE THAT SPARKS IN YOU?
