[FOOD] GET READY TO STIMULATE YOUR TASTE BUDS WITH YASSIN KAMPUNG'S FIRST EVER MALA CREATIONS!

Yassin Kampung, a MUIS Halal-certified family restaurant with over 15 years of experience serving Halal Asian Cuisine in Singapore had recently introduced their first ever Mala dishes, a much welcoming news for fans, especially muslin friends, of the tongue searing and numbing spices that had been taking Singapore by storm in the recent months.


Specially concocted by their very own Founder and Head Chef, Mr. Muhammad Yassin Ng, these mala dishes were bound to stimulate your taste buds with an explosion of flavours of Chef Yassin's interpretation of the Sichuan cuisine.


Upon stepping into the restaurant, the rustic and idyllic kampung village setting made me felt like I'm being transported back to the early days of Singapore. It was a cozy feeling and this was what Yassin Kampung hoped to achieve, with the "gotong royong" or Kampung spirit" in mind.



I attended the food tasting with Meryl and initially was a bit worried that we would not be able to take the spicy level. However, it turned out that we were really enjoying all the dishes that were served despite the spiciness.

DRINKS, SIDE DISH AND SOUP


Before anything, we were first asked to choose our beverages. I settled for the drink called Over the Rainbow as it was the most striking and colourful one on the menu. It was very well made and gathered a lot of photo taking by itself.


We started of the session with some Keropok to munch on. It was a very addictive side dish and once I started, I couldn't stop munching. It was both crunchy and nice especially when dipped into their special sauce. 


The Soup Ekor was tasty and flavourful, the ox-tail meat was soft and falls off the bone easily. The other ingredients of the soup were vegetable, herbs and spices.


THE MALA CREATIONS

It doesn't matter whether you were a poultry or seafood lover, as the mala dishes included both chicken and seafood. Coupled with the addictive mouth numbing sensation of Sichuan peppercorn and fiery heat from the dried chili that would sear, numb and tantalise your taste buds at the same time.


The Sichuan Mala Fragrant Fish was my favourite out of the four mala dishes. The fish was deep-fried with the Mala sauce poured over it. Partly because this dish had the most sauce that I could use to go with the white rice.


The Sichuan Mala Fried Crab was pretty fresh with its own natural sweetness combined with the strong mala taste at the same time.


For the Sichuan Mala Crispy Prawn, the spiciness were at the shell so after peeling off the prawn shell, the prawn was not that spicy.


The Sichuan Mala Diced Chicken had got to be the spiciest one. The mouth-numbing sensation hits me the moment I took my first bite. I had to wash down the spiciness with cold drinks. It was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside with a taste of mala and peppery flavour that were well mixed and absorbed into the meat itself.


OTHER SIGNATURE DISHES


Other than the Mala dishes, the other unique flavour that could be found at Yassin Kampung was Asia's First Kampung Durian Chicken! Durian being the king of all fruits had become one of the staple fruits in Singapore and you would either love it or hate it. The commitment to come up with unique and flavourful dishes for customers had spurred Chef Yassin Ng to create this dish. Tremendous effort and time had been put into researching and developing to discover the best way to maximise the flavours of the durian without it being too overwhelming.


The dish was served with the creamy durian sauce, with real durian flesh, coating over the juicy and tender chicken. I gave a thumbs up in my mind for this wonderful blend of the sweet and savoury combination. The durian sauce was light and not too overpowering and it was a nice change after all the spicyness.


The BBQ Sambal Stingray had been my favourite dish since young and their version of the sambal chili was just right for me.


The Kampung Satay Platter was great. The meat was very juicy and tender.


The only vegetable dish we had was the Baby Kailan with Salted Fish. It's simple and balance out all the special flavoured dishes and amount of meat we had from the whole meal so far.


SWEET DESSERT TIME



Both Meryl and I were already quite full from the meal so for dessert, the both of us chose to share the Ice Milo Kepal which was something like Milo Ice Kachang. It was served with biscuit crumble, chocolate chips as well as a piece of Oreo cookie. The biscuit crumble and chocolate chips added another layer of texture to the dessert.

Good news to those living in the East where it's often said that it's a good food paradise, Yassin Kampung will be opening up their first outlet in the Eastern part of Singapore, at BEDOK: 215 Bedok North Street 1 #01-83 Singapore 460215, just a 5 minutes walk from Bedok MRT station, so do stay tuned for some exciting promotions during the opening!


I had a wonderful dinner, nice catch up session with Meryl and would definitely return to visit Yassin Kampung again with my family next time!
