A+E Networks' Lifetime on StarHub TV Channel 514 will present a new cooking competition series called MAN VS CHILD: CHEF SHOWDOWN. If you love watching how great chefs pits their culinary skills, this is a show that you wouldn't want to miss.
What makes this series even more interesting is that it's a showdown between some of the world's most talented young cooks against those professionally trained, adult chefs. Which means that some of these adult chefs would have actually been cooking much longer than their young challengers have been alive!
This 13-episode series hosted by chef and television personality Adam Gertler will see a team of five up-and-coming child cooking wunderkids - Estie (8), Dylan (11), Emmalee (12), Cloyce (13) and Holden (14) - competing against a different chef each week.
Every episode is made up of three rounds of cooking set to test the competitors' abilities and mastery in the kitchen, from making sausages from scratch to preparing the perfect omelet. The kids will nominate a team-mate to compete in each challenge.
In the first two rounds, resident judges and commentators (chef-restaurateur Mike Isabella and private chef to the stars Alia Zaine) will taste the dishes to determine which chef has created the most delicious and inventive plate. The winner of each of the first two events will be awarded an advantage in the next round which includes preventing their competitor from tasting their food as they prepare it and forcing them to take a ten-minute break during the allotted cooking time. The final round will feature a blind taste-test by a world-renowned master chef such as Hubert Keller and Ludo Lefebvre that will determine the ultimate winner - the professionals or the youthful contenders.
As part of the promotional tour for the show's launch, there was a 'Meet-and-Greet' event of Estie Kung, the youngest chef on the show at IKEA Alexandra/Tampines on the 17th Jan 2016. Together with Jessie and Meryl, we met at Bedok to have our lunch before taking the free shuttle service from Bedok bus stop to Ikea Tampines for this event.
The precocious Kung, who is half-Chinese is said to have started cooking at the age of 3 and she cooked her first dish at age 4! She was only 7 years old when she appeared in the show and she turned 8 this year. At that age, I haven't even learnt how to cook an egg! Some of the questions thrown at her and her answers.
Qns: What's your favourite dish in Singapore?
Ans: Bundung.
Qns: How did you travel to Singapore?
Ans: By Business Class.
Qns: What do you see yourself in 20 years time?
Ans: To have her own cookbook, restaurant and TV Show. For her restaurant, it would be Something French.
She's really adorable and answered all the questions thrown at her like a big adult. Managed to get her signature too. We didn't get to see her show off her cooking skill live but we did catch the first episode of the show, aptly titled "Don't Under-ESTIE-mate Her", in which she whips up a Korean fried chicken dish with kimchi mayonnaise and a gochujang gastrique. Check out my Instagram (@chewyjas) for some of the Estie's videos taken during the meet-and-greet session.

Estie also create exclusive recipes using IKEA's salmon and vegetable balls. These recipes will be available at IKEA' Singapore's Swedish Food Market for a limited time from 17 Jan 2016.
With the $5 Ikea gift card I received, I went to try the dishes out. On the left is the vegetable balls with curry sauce while on the right is the salmon. Very filling.
There is also a #JustAKid campaign in celebration of children on Lifetime with the aim of showcasing exceptional kids who prove that what young ones lack in experience, they can make up for with creativity and enthusiasm.
Thanks Meryl for the group photo |
