Cozy Dinner at Woody family cafe

Singapore is truly a food paradise. It doesn't matter whether you stayed in the North, South, East or West, there's definitely food for everyone. For this post, let me (the "Westerner") brings you to explore a hidden gem in the Northernmost part of Singapore - Sembawang, to this cozy pub/cafe called Woody family cafe!

Tucked and snuggled in the outskirts of Singapore, among the terraced houses at Sembawang Straits Estate. Although this place may takes a bit more effort to reach, it's definitely worth it. I can really sense the coziness and felt so at home when I arrived at this cafe.

Look at the decorations. The tiny light bulbs hanging at the ceiling makes me felt like I'm dining under thousands of stars. Pretty romantic right? Usually, pubs give me the impression of music so loud that I can't hold a proper conversation and lightning so dim that I can't see what I'm eating. However, it's the total opposite here at Woody Family Pub/Cafe. I can just imagine holding a special gathering here with just a few special friends. Also, even though it's an outdoor dining area, there's ample fans installed and I don't feel hot and stuffy throughout my meal at all. Just very comfortable.

Halloween Nites Special from 25th to 31st October with their specially concocted Halloween Cocktail drinks. Just for Halloween only, so better be there to try them. The owner of this cafe, Jenny told us that she loves to come up with new concoctions for different occasion so perhaps for Christmas, there would be some new drinks too.

Top Row From Left to Right :

- Mini fake pumpkin table light
- Devilish Pumpkin (Tequila, Orange Curacao, Lemon, Lime and Orange Juice)
Frozen Blue Monkey (Lychee Beer, Blue Curacao, Frozen Ice)

Bottom Row From Left to Right:

- Devil's Juice (Cranberry, Tomato, Lemon, Soda)
- Magical Potion (Pineapple, Orange, Mango, Ginger Ale, Rose Syrup, Soda)

Verdict : I love the Magical Potion the best. It suits my taste and is sweet and refreshing. The Devil's Juice tasted too sour.

Mango Salad whipped out in a Paranakan style topped with Jenny's special homemade sauce. It's a fusion of east meets west. Some of the ingredients inside include, starfruits, guava, tomato, jambu and other vegetables. A healthy dish indeed.

Pumpkin Soup is like a clear chicken soup with lots of carrots and chicken meat. The chicken is soft and savory.

Beer Batter Fish and Chips is a definite hit for me. I love how crispy and flavourful the batter is on the outside and soft white fish on the inside. The secret to the crispiness of the fish and chips is in the beer batter, though we can't really taste the beer as it have already evaporated under high temperature. Another unique point to this dish is that Jenny replaced the usual coleslaw salad with Ah Char. Even a Western dish like this can also have a little nyonya surprise!

Lamb Shank Rendang is a spicy dish that will numb your mouth. The meat is brewed for 3 - 4 hours in Guinness Stout and lots of other secret ingredients to make the gravy so rich and thick. Dip it with bread so that it's not too spicy to handle.

Buffalo Wings is a must-try dish. Choose the level of spiciness and bring your taste buds to the extreme limits by eating their volcanic eruption buffalo wings. Haha, be prepared to drink lots of water after this.

Chinchalok Omelette is egg omelette fermented with shrimp. A totally authentic Nonya style dish. It's not too salty.

Onion Rings is very crispy and nice. Again, the sauce used is different from the norm. Instead of chili sauce or mayonnaise sauce, wasabi mayo is used. I'm not a person who fancy wasabi for I dislike the strong effect caused but wasabi mayo goes very well with the onion rings. Jenny told us that she is also thinking of coming up with other sauces like custard. Interesting.

Fried Golden Mushroom is a great snacks to bite during beer drinking. It's also nice to eat them on its own.

We ended our scrumptious meal with two yummy desserts. Blueberry Gelato Ice-Cream and Coconut Sorbet. The coconut sorbet is even served inside a coconut shell. I'm a lover for sweet desserts so I finished the coconut sorbet which looks like beancurd.

Here's a group photo together with the friendly owners of this cafe. That's Sam and Jenny, a loving couple. Jenny chatted with us most of the time, sharing on how she came up with ideas for the dishes. Not only is she the owner of this cafe, she's also the chef and would usually be busy in the kitchen over-seeing that everything is alright. I can really feel her passion in cooking and coming up with new dishes every now and then. Really enjoyed myself there.

History Quiz Night with Simon Yin at Crazy Elephant

Tagged along Jessie to join Hp and William for an evening of drinks, snacks and rounds of trivia quizzes ranging from general knowledge to popular culture to sports!

This History Quiz Night event at Crazy Elephant was actually set up in conjunction with the launch of HISTORY's Ultimate History Quiz and a brand new season of Hidden Cities Extreme that would be premiering on 29 October, Monday at 9.30pm on History Channel. Do catch it if you have this channel at home as you would be able to witness some of the most thrilling adventures Asia has to offer.

Our cool welcome drink. Shot in a skull. Very Halloween theme.

As you can see, the crowds soon filled up the empty pub and all of us were treated to a filling free flow dinner to satisfy our hungry first before the quiz starts. Thanks William for taking the photos with his camera!

Simon Yin is the newest host for the Hidden Cities Extreme as well as the Quiz Master tonight. We were also shown videos of the scenes in the Hidden Cities Extreme.

Our team won by getting 8/10 of the answers correct in the first round of the quiz. The first round of the quiz is a test of our general knowledge. The above photo is Jess and I with our rewards for winning! In case you are curious, we were asked questions like, "In which year was the Straits Times first published?" "What year was chewing gum banned in Singapore?" and "What year was COE introduced?" Etc. A total of 10 questions were asked in each category. We fared the worst at the Sports category.

Great hangout with friends and we each got a black "Simon Says Extreme" t-shirt to bring home for memory. Thanks for this event!

Cia Hui birthday celebration at BEDS KTV Pub

The reaction of some who seems shocked that I attended amused me alot. Just because I don't frequent pubs/clubs etc doesn't mean I wouldn't attend a friend's birthday there what? Furthermore, there's always a first time to anything. I was among the earliest to reach and I'm glad about it. Drank some beer and sang a few songs. Yes, it's my first time singing in the open hall with so many strangers. Luckily, one of Hui's ex-colleague sang with me. Stopped singing when the place gets crowded and my impressions towards some people changed from the way they talked. Hmmm.

Me and Hui the birthday gal, my listener cum OT buddy. She's really understanding and so pretty with her new hairstyle. Love this photo with the very nice effect done by her friend cum the photographer of the day.

Group photo. Overall, BEDS KTV Pub is a nice place to chill and relax. Took a cab back with PY at about 1am while the rest of them party on till 4am at another location. Personally I think I made the right choice of not staying. Sometimes, too many people around caused lots of gossips. Those kind of A don't like B, B don't like C, C like D, D like E or even more complicated than that. Luckily I wasn't there to witness and seriously I don't wish to find out what happened. Glad that the birthday gal is not involved. I wished that she enjoyed her birthday to the fullest and hope that she will get her recognition and finds her other half soon. :)
