[RUN] Team MESUGOI at the MIZUNO EKIDEN 21.1km Relay Run 2016

The second edition of Mizuno Ekiden took place at The Promontory @ Marina Bay in the evening and the participation rate this year doubled as compared to last year with more than 4,000 runners taking part.

The Mizuno Ekiden this year is also part of a year-long SJ50 celebration to commemorate the 50 years of diplomatic tires and relationship between Singapore and Japan.

As a gesture of good luck, Mr Kiyoshi Tatani, President of Mizuno Singapore painted the eye on the Daruma Doll before the Flag Off. The Ambassador for the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, His Excellency Mr Kenji Shinoda was also there to grace the event and flagged off all race categories in the afternoon.

Our team name MESUGOI was thought out way back in March by Danessa, who later have other focus thus did not join us. ME is the acronym of Mizuno Ekiden and Sugoi means Awesome in Japanese. So that's how our team name MESUGOI was formed after adding them together. During the discussion stage, we even have kawaii4u, MEKawaii, MESporty, etc. Glad we didn't use kawaii in the end if not I'm not sure if Kelvin will join us. Haha.

Featuring teams of four runners, this relay race really does requires a great amount of teamwork, perseverance and dedication by each runner and these are also some of the Japanese culture and spirit. It's my first time taking part in such relay races and I'm really excited and nervous at the same time. It didn't help much that I was still not feeling too well and coughing badly the night before. Nearly wanted to just find a replacement to take over my position but I'm really don't like the feeling of last minute backing out so I just pray to God and tell myself to be well for this run and I'm glad that my coughing really stopped.

We signed up for the 21.1km race and Tracy was the first runner for the race. We could hear the taiko drum beating at the village signalling the start of the race for the first runner.

Jessie and I before while waiting for our turn. Photo Credit Kelvin
Jessie was the second runner while I was the third runner. A photo with my running buddy in bright green while waiting.

Runners and members of the public were treated to a wide range of Japanese food and beverages such as ramen, takoyaki, gyoza, matcha latte and beer at the Matsuri Race Village.Various Japanese-themed activities like the sumo wrestling also kept the runners entertained before and after the run. These are to be purchased with coupons sold at the race village itself.

Being the second, third and fourth runners, we have to track our teammates timing and running progress via a unique URL and keying in our unique code on our race bib. This is the transition waiting area whereby we waited inside for the previous runner to be back with the sash. Only after receiving the sash can one start to run. Thus, it's only the first runners who begin the race together at the same timing. The rest of us would depends on what time the previous runner came back.

Started running at 5:54pm and although I've ran this route before during the training clinic, I still find it pretty tough especially at the slope of the Helix Bridge.

Not a very good timing and later I found out that if I had came in 15 minutes later, the whole team will be disqualified. Goodness!

Kelvin, the last runner sprint all the way to cover up the lost timing and also collected all our medals for us. That's how our medals look like when placed together.

So happy to be able to complete the race together. I would love to participate in the run again next year.

BIG CONGRATS TO THE FOLLOWING RACE WINNERS

In the 21.1km Corporate Category, Team COL, consisting of Mr Cleeve Mu, Mr Ramesh Palaniandy, Mr Yew Meng Tan and Mr Yong Heng Cher representing Singapore Prison Service. They clinch the top prize of over S$2,300 worth of cash and vouchers with a timing of 01:25:37.

In the open categories, the quartet of Mr Bjay Sunuwar, Mr Jite Gaha, Mr Nims Gurung and Mr Robert Rai from GC Team won the 42.195km race with a timing of 2:40:26 and the team made up of Mr Chew Jee Keng, Mr Desmond Ang, Mr Evan Chee and Mr Marcus Ang from Team Rabak Rangerz won the 21.1km race with a timing of 1:16:46.

A new element for this year's race was the Subaru Endurance Challenge where three of the fastest runners to complete a marked-out route of 2.4km were given a direct pass to the Subaru Challenge 2016.

I end my post with a flat-lay of the Mizuno Ekiden race pack. Thank you to the Mizuno Ekiden team for the wonderful experiences starting from the running clinics.

XOXO

[TRAINING] Mizuno Ekiden 2016 Final Training Run

Attended the final Running Clinic organised by the Mizuno Ekiden team with the pacers from Team RunFanatics. Together, we ran on the actual Mizuno Ekiden 2016 race route. Really love this group photo taken together before the run. I can still recognize the familiar faces of the pacers from the last session. Thank you for running with us again! Photo credit to Mizuno Ekiden FB page.

The starting point of the run at The Promontory @ Marina Bay. Luckily, the weather was quite cooling.

The actual race route from The Promontory to the Satay by the Bay before returning back. It was mentioned that the first and last runner would have a slightly longer route. I'm kind of worried that I might run off track to the wrong route because being in a relay race also means that everyone starts from a different timing except the first runner, thus I went for this training run to test run the actual race route. It was definitely a scenic route, spotted a couple taking their wedding photo there.

Brought Lynette along with me as she loves running too.

Coach Sham must have noticed the potential my friend has in running as he personally guided her on the correct running technique and posture.

The cooling down exercise with Coach Sham.

Running coach and certified nutritionist Coach Shatek sharing useful tips on the type of meals one should consume before and after a long run. Over-eating will make you feel sleepy, sluggish and tired, commonly known as a food coma after a buffet. He recommend us to reduce our carbo intake before the race. Brown rice is essential as they contain Vitamin B, iron and fibre and make you feel less hungry.

The healthy food we ate after the training run.

Snacks: Harvest Box Snack Pack - Strawberry Milkshake at $3 per packet from the vending machine at NTUC Building

Lunch: Healthy brown rice with mushroom herbal pot at Greendot, One Raffles Plce

Dessert: Complimentary cup of Chocolate Origin Dark Gelato at Bugis Junction.

You don't need a reason for indulgence, they say and a little chocolate is good for health too.

Looking forward to the race in July. In addition, the organisers have even introduced a new competitive race element in partnership with Subaru- The Subaru Endurance Challenge. Subaru is the official automobile sponsor of the race, and all registered participants will be entitled to compete in the challenge. The runners (from the respective categories that clocks the fastest timing within a specific distance of the race route, will emerge as the winners of the Subaru Endurance Challenge.

The three winners will be entitled to a direct pass to the 2016 Subaru Car Challenge and would not need to vie for a spot in the finals with thousands of other applicants. In addition, they will receive Subaru merchandise worth $210. Timing will be tracked via the timing chip on the bib and results would be announced at the end of the race on event day.

[TRAINING] Mizuno Ekiden 2016 First Training Run

The Mizuno Ekiden 2016 Run is a relay race whereby each team of four will come together to complete either a Half Marathon (21.1km) or Full Marathon (42.195km) together. Have signed up for the 21.1km relay race with 3 other running buddies, Tracy, Jessie and Kelvin. I was arranged to be at the 3rd position.

Was on leave today to train up for the run
To help us in our preparation for the actual run on 16th July, the Mizuno Ekiden team has arrange running clinics for the runners. This is their first running clinic that took place at the Singapore Sports Hub.
Cool down exercise
Coach Shanmugam Subramanaim a.k.a Coach Sham leading us in the warm up and cool down session. Coach Sham is an accomplished long-distance runner who have completed numerous local and overseas races. He is also an accredited coach by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF). He is currently the Head Coach and Founder of Team RunFanatics.

Photo with Coach Sham after the run
Glad to have Coach Sham to train and guide us with the proper running techniques.

With a super encouraging Pacer - Shawn
In addition, I would like to thanks the very encouraging and motivating pacers from Team RunFanatics. They were all so young and energetic to accompany us to run early in the morning. Felt so bad that I have to stop and walk and they can only run slowly to accompany me. Geez. Have a good chat with the group that job/run with me.

Thanks Fadzly for the photo
My all-time running buddy who have ran with me for most of the races.

Had the chance to try out a pair of Jabra Sport Pulse Wireless Earbuds, which actually has an app to track one's overall fitness as well as to capture key stats like time, pace, distance, calories burned, peak and average heart rate, and others. They were one of the sponsors for the Mizuno Ekiden 2016 Run.

I can't run without music. This pair of Jabra Sport Pulse Wireless Earbuds is awesome because now I need not worry about my earpiece wire tangling together. Just need to pair this up with my iPhone with the Bluetooth function.

Lastly, a group photo for memory. Was a wonderful time running but the weather was too hot even in the morning.
