What started off as a group action by residents to solve flooding issues turned into an annual street party for the residents at Jalan Bintang Tiga!
Marking the 20th anniversary of the Big Makan Party was the unveiling of 'The Friendly Street' street sign Identity Motif (IM) for Jalan Bintang Tiga. This is a first of its kind in Singapore to receive this acknowledgement. I was invited to witness the unveiling as well as be part of the potluck party.
Mr Edwin Tong, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law & Ministry of Health, and Member of Parliament for Marina Parade GRC was the Guest-Of-Honour for this event. Together with Dr William Wan, General Secretary of the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM), they did the unveiling of the IM.
The residents were also creative enough to use balloons for the "fire crackers effect". It sounded exactly like fire crackers

Following the unveiling of the friendly street identity motif was the gathering of the residents for an evening of fun, games and food to relive the "kampung spirit" and foster closer neighbourly ties.
Organized by local best-selling author of Mr Kiasu, James Suresh and his committee of neighbours, they played the Opera Estate Knowledge Quiz with prizes to test how well the residents knew their estate. They even had a special trophy for the postman who has been delivering the letters to their estate for the past 30 years.
Since 2013, the Singapore Kindness Movement had supported this Big Makan Party, holding it up as an example of a gracious neighbourhood made possible by the ownership and spontaneous initiative of the residents themselves. In 2018, James Suresh was inducted into the Kindred Spirit Circle as a VoLK (Voice of Loving Kindness) for being a kindness advocate in promoting neighbourliness.
Dinner started shortly, with one table for Halal food and the other for non-halal food. Beside the wide variety of home cooked food cooked prepared by the residents, there were also some food sponsored by the neighbouring restaurants. They were Baker & Cook, Garang Grill and Black and Ink.
We later spotted this jelly cake which was painstakingly prepared by one of the residents there. This dish definitely captured a lot of attention and people were trying to get a nice photo of it. I later learnt that it had been a regular dish every year with the number adding on.
We didn't stay on for the games and pinata. I think that it was really a good activity for the neighbours to come together to bond. Living in a HDB flat, I hardly see my neighbours and I didn't even know their names. It really took some effort to be able to come up with something like this. Thank you for the invitation and to let me see and experience a different kind of neighbourhood event. If I receive the invitation again next year, I shall try to remember to bring some nice food along for the party too.
