[Movie] Preview Screening of THE TUNNEL 《隧道惊魂》

Thanks Meryl for bringing me to the preview screening of Korean Horror Movie - The Tunnel which opens in cinema on 11 June 2015. I don't recall watching a lot of Korean horror movies so I would treat this as my first Korean horror movie review.

MAIN TRAILER

SYNOPSIS

The main character, Eun Joo (Jung Yu-Mi) meets up with a group of friends for a launch party of a luxurious resort before it officially opens. The party was held at the abandoned coal mine and just before it gets into full swing, a strange looking man barges in and demanded the party to stop and everyone to leave, if not they will all be cursed and killed. He further demonstrated his point by cutting his wrist and showing everyone that his blood is black! (Note the black blood as there will be a few other scenes with lots of black blood) The group separated and went out to the forest for different purpose and one of them happens to bump into the strange looking man who tried to kill her. The group heard her screaming and accidentally killed the strange looking man. They decided to dispose the body deep in the coal mine tunnel so that nobody could find the body and that's when all the strange incident starts to happen.

REVIEW

In my opinion, The Tunnel barely hits my expectation of a horror movie. It's one movie whereby I don't try to cover my eyes or my ears. The most scary scene is that of Yoo-Gyeong's with her hollowed-out eye sockets which is barely frightening. There were some disturbing scenes which will kind of create the jolts but you will soon realize the 'ghosts' in the movie were almost non-existent. The 'ghosts' were simply hallucinated out due to the lack of oxygen in the tunnel for too long which was explained in the later part of the movie. In fact, after the movies, Jess, Jo, Meryl and I were discussing about the movie and we each came up with so many questionable scenes that we can't figure out. Does Eun Joo know the group of friends or is it her first time meeting them? The strange looking man supposed to have black blood but why when they carry the body in the white cover shows red stains? What I enjoyed in this movie is watching how Eun Joo kept a poker face but is actually the mastermind behind everything. She was so calm and harmless you would not expect she's plotting a revenge until everything was revealed towards the end of the movie. Her motive of doing all these is kind of sad and the scene she reunited with her dead father makes me think of the recent disasters that's happening. Overall, don't expect too much of a horror but good enough to watch even if you are not a fan of horror movies.
